2017 Review Thingy

Questions taken from Shauna Reid, because the actual reverb thingy appears to have stalled on the interwebs.

The question list is a bit too long to tackle in one sitting, so I’ve divided it into two.

1. What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before?

Um. Zumba! I tried a zumba class, managed not to trip over my own feet, and liked it enough to go back again. and again.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for this year?
Once again, I’ve forgotten what my resolutions were. Luckily I have last year’s reverb to check.

mindfulness – yes. Sort of. I participated in a program called power of presence, then mindful in may, then mindful in may continuers. I did get into a bad habit on the train though, of thinking I could multitask, and use both my phone AND meditate at the same time.
being present in the moment – sometimes.
Being grateful for the little things – like a wave, I did it lots at one point, and then not much in others. Sometimes I would stop, look up, and appreciate the lovely blue sky above.
Stop buying stuff. Yes. And no.
Start decluttering. No. I just collected more and more plants, seeds.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

4. Did anyone close to you pass away?
Not close to me, but two colleagues passed away recently. It was a bit of a shock, because one of them had just retired early so that he could enjoy time with his family.

5. What countries did you visit?
Taiwan.

6. What would you like to have next year that you lacked in this one?
More travel.

7. What dates from this year will remain etched upon your memory?
I had think about this one. Perhaps the date that I logged into my university website and found out that I had passed my last subject, and as a result …

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I finally finished my post-graduate degree. Woot!

9. What was your biggest failure?

Procrastination. I’m really good at putting things off.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Just niggles associated with getting a year older …

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I can’t remember one thing that stands out. I did buy a recently discontinued solidtecknics Cast Iron “Deepan”, whilst I was overseas. Probably bit of an impulse buy

12. Where did most of your money go?

Remedial Massage! My physiotherapist left me (he got a new job), and after finding various massage therapists not suiting me, I finally found a good place. Such a shame it’s on the other side of town.

13. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Home fermentation. I got some milk kefir grains via the crop swap sydney group, and have been trying them out again. If I make small quantities, it is manageable, and I like having a milk fruit “smoothie” (or a fruit lassi) in the mornings. Then I split the grains 50/50, and have been making both milk kefir and nut milk kefir. Nut milk kefir makes really fluffy pancakes, particularly if you have the patience to make the batter the night before. Then there was my kombucha, and water kefir. Oh yeah, and I made miso.

14. What song will always remind you of this year?

Not my “song”, but my soundtrack to the latter half of this year was anything zumba:

15. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?

Can I be both happier and sadder? That’s about different aspects of my life.

b) thinner or fatter?
Much of a muchness. Certainly a little stronger than last year; but not as strong as the year before that. When I changed jobs, I lost access to onsite bootcamp/yoga, and it’s taken a bit of effort to put exercise back into my routine again.
c) richer or poorer?
Marginally poorer, because I keep spending on stuff that “I really really need”, then once I get said stuff, suddenly don’t need it any more.

16. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Time with friends. I think I said that last year.

18. How did you spend Christmas?
Christmas lunch with the family on Christmas Eve. Flew out overseas on Christmas Day.

19. Did you fall in love this year?
No.

20. What was your favourite TV program?
I had a bit of a noir thing going.

Midnight Sun (loved it so much, I watched it back to back, twice), followed by Witnesses, then followed by Dicte episodes back to back until she annoyed me with her pigheadedness. All courtesy of sbsondemand. Love it.

21. What was the best book you read?
Brene Brown’s Daring Greatly. I’m sure I’ve read others, but this one resonated with me, and was read most recently.

Oh!Oh and Gut. Fabulous. I then turned into a microbiome preacher, and how I have little bacteria in my gut that crave donuts, so intuitive eating probably isn’t a good thing.

22. What was your favourite film?
Um. I picked three tv shows!

23. What did you do on your birthday
Didn’t go to work. Had lunch with my mum.

24. What kept you sane?
Lunchtime swimming, and then when the pool shut down (*sob*), lunchtime yoga. Putting in regular exercise as part of my weekly schedule.

25. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Um.

26. Who did you miss?
Still miss my mother in law. I also miss the camaraderie of my old workplace, but looking to build camaraderie at my new(er) workplace.

I forgot about doing this until I spotted Shauna Reid’s edition. Oh noes! I’ve missed the haze of a post Christmas/New Year lethargy, but if I don’t post now, I never will.

1. What did you do in 2016 that you’d never done before?

Changed jobs. This may not sound a big thing to you, but after spending 10 years at the same company (ancient, I know), and then upping sticks for different work environment, that’s HUGE for me. Plus, I had a fondness for the old workplace which was slowly eroding away, as the good things that had made it a wonderful workplace were being eroded away.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for this year?
Can’t remember what they were, and thus I can’t remember if I kept them.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes, my friend Clare. Such a gorgeous little thing, sometimes she greets you with a serious look, and then suddenly she smiles. Wow.

Father in law. Friend’s sister.

5. What countries did you visit?
USA. Taiwan. Funeral. Holiday.

6. What would you like to have next year that you lacked in this one?
Patience.

7. What dates from this year will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Anzac Day (25 April), we were in our Nation’s capital, we saw a football game, and then on the drive back, the father in law passed away.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Making the leap from one job to another. Yes I know, I should define myself more than my work, but you do spend 30% of your time there.

Catching a LOT of swarms – BEEcoming obsessed.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Being present in the moment.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Gave myself some form of RSI from squeezing honey out of honeycomb using my hands.

11. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?

sadder

b) thinner or fatter?

same same. Slightly porkier.
c) richer or poorer?
One year’s salary richer. One year’s spending on vintage tupperware poorer.

12. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Parkrun!
Have you heard about this? Every saturday morning, around 8am (or whatever suits the local council), there is a free, timed 5km running event at various locations.

13. How did you spend Christmas?

With the family. Surprisingly, I didn’t kill them. There’s always next year.

14. Did you fall in love this year?

With my friend Clare’s baby.

15. What was your favourite TV program?

The Katering Show. I discovered it. Watched two seasons cover to cover in (almost) one sitting, and then started again.

16. What was the best book you read?
I didn’t read that many books in 2016, but I just found out about The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko, which has even been made into a film!
How did I miss that?

17. What was your favourite film?

Inside Out. I watched it on the plane.
I also watched Bad Moms 1.5 times, it took me a few days to realise that the plane version had *censored out* the video sex scene. One day the main character had a husband at home, the next day she didn’t.

18. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Didn’t go to work. Old enough to know better.

19. Who did you miss?
Mother in Law. She passed away in early 2015, and not a week goes by that I think “She would’ve known the answer to that!” I wish she was still with us.

Reverb 2015

This year, I started Reverb 2015 in August. No joke. I think I was avoiding doing actual work on my post-graduate degree. Hear that?! I finally committed to further education!!

2014.6. Prompt for 6 December 2014 :
Money. Where did you spend your money this year? Did you save it instead? What, if anything, would you like to do with your finances this year?

I started a post graduate degree! I haven’t gone the whole hog, because *that’s* 24 thousand big ones, but I’m doing the graduate certificate version. Why? Because I’m paying for it, not my work.

2015.1. Prompt for 1 December:
What sorts of lists do you have on the go at the moment? What do they suggest you are praying for?

Many many to-do lists. To-do at work. Shopping lists (I should really just have a perpetual shopping list). To-do at home lists. It would appear that I am praying for better organisation and structure.

2015.2 Prompt for 2 December
What surprised you this year?

I recently wrote a post about how I was a little busy, and would return to the blog shortly. My post originally had stated: “I’m so snowed under what with work, bees, family, uni studies… “. I was a little surprised that I had put work first amongst my priorities. I am trying to change that.

2015.3 Prompt for 3 December:
When was the last time you stopped to look up at the moon?

What did she have to say to you?

I really do admire the moonrises, especially when the sky is that lovely purple-pink-blue colour of sunset. I think the last time I tried to take a photo of the moon was when the planets Jupiter and Venus were in the western sky, and the International Space Station zoomed past. I missed that photo, but I followed the International Space Station from West to East, whereupon the moon was rising. Hello! It happened just after the weekly yoga session at work.

2015.4 Prompt for 4 December:
How can you replenish your (physical, mental, spiritual and/or emotional) resources? What do you need most of all at this moment?

Me time. Rest.

6. Prompt for 6 December:
Money. Where did you spend your money this year? Did you save it instead? What, if anything, would you like to do with your finances this year?

I’m generally more of a saver than a spender, but that doesn’t mean I don’t spend. I like to use good quality ingredients in my cooking, in my eating. I didn’t think that there was much difference in ‘no-name’ brand flour and ‘branded’ flour (and I’m not even getting into the stone ground flour yet). But this year I noticed a difference: everything that I made with the no-name brand was more rock-like than expected, and the results didn’t rise. The taste was always ‘flat’ and uninteresting.

When buying clothing, I prefer to spend more on long lasting well made pieces to wear than the latest trend from a chain-store knockoff. I try to buy Australian made and ethical wherever possible. There have been less shopping trips to Melbourne this year.

I have spent a lot of money on the bees, I think I’m at $1500 so far, less than 6 months in. Hopefully this will settle down as I have bought the hive, the protective equipment, and I’m in the process of buying another hive. I don’t anticipate any additional costs from now. fingers crossed.

With the finances in 2015: hoping to have enough money for property purchase, or some shares. My procrastination will have to take a bit of a backseat.

7. Prompt for 7 December:
Victory Laps: What was your biggest accomplishment this year?

Got bees. ‘Nuff said. Oh wait, they accomplish all on their own without me.
I tried to meditate/conduct yoga for a month straight. Mostly did it for most of the month.

8. Prompt for 8 December:
Hero: Who was your hero this year? Tell us why. What makes a hero in your eyes?

I admire the Australian author Bob Graham, who donated part of his winnings from the 2014 Prime Ministers Children’s Fiction Awards to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. This is in front of a PM who implemented a “closed border” policy of towing asylum seeker boats away from Australia, to their alleged point of origin. Even using inflatable life rafts as a boat substitute.

Australia is a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention. Seeking asylum is a human right. If we deny people that right, are we really human?

9. Prompt for 9 December:
The Plank: It has been said that you must learn to take care of yourself before you can be effective at taking care of others. How did you take care of yourself in 2013 (sic)? How will you take care of yourself in 2014 (sic)?

Meditate more. Perform Yoga more than once a week (so I’m 6 sessions out so far this year). Donate more to charity.

10. Prompt for 10 December:
Leap of faith: What decision did you make this year that was a leap of faith? Did it work out? Or not?

Committing to getting the bees. Bees are for life, not just for Christmas.

11. Prompt for 11 December:
Small Pleasures: What small pleasures did you discover this year?

Watching the bees go about their normal activity at the hive entrance. Turning my foraging eyes “on” and looking a what is in bloom in the neighbourhood, and what the bees could be collecting today. That’s what will go into the honey and the bee bread that they’re making. Each teaspoon of honey is a reflection of what’s in the surrounding environment, and contains the nectar of up to 1000 flowers.

Reverb 2014, Part One

1. Prompt for 1 December:
At the start: Where did you start 2014? Give us some background on this year.

Can’t remember. Sorry. Doing stuff relating to a funding proposal that was supposed to have been done and dusted about 2 years ago, yet now, another year on, we are still doing funding proposal related stuff. And guess what? It starts again next year!

There was less bootcamp this year. We didn’t have the numbers to keep the bootcamp sessions going onsite at work, which is a shame for something that had been running for at least three years. Hopefully in 2015, we can get some session happening again if we can team up with another corporate group nearby.

Instead of doing lots of baking related things, this year it was all about the bees. I was either reading about them, painting their house, sitting by their hive entrance watching their comings and goings, listening to them at the back of their house, or chasing them around the neighbourhood.

2. Prompt for 2 December:
Gorgeous: When did you feel beautiful this year? Why?

Seriously? This is a question? Is this because more females are doing this writing/reflection project that they’ve asked this sort of question? What about the males? Ah, that’s right, they don’t look back, they just grunt and return to their cave. One thing that I have been more conscious of this year is the type of compliments that you pay to the daughter’s of friends. Rather than emphasising body image in something like :”Don’t you look pretty today”, saying things like: “You helped me do X, how very clever of you!”.

3. Prompt for 3 December
Coulda woulda shoulda: What didn’t you do this year because you were too scared, afraid, unsure? Are you going to do it next year? Or maybe you don’t want to anymore?

So I meant to use my dSLR more. I didn’t.
I meant to procrastinate less. I didn’t. In fact, I think I’m procrastinating right now.

Do Over: Hindsight is the one thing we never benefit from in the present. Is there one moment you wish that you could do-over?

Letting go: For next year, I’m letting go of…

Frozen, the movie. The angst. The most popular presents for girls in 2014 was all about Frozen.
I do tend to navel gaze a bit, and repeat in my head stuff that has happened I should move on from. But quite frankly, I’m an improvement on the previous model who are still rabbiting on and on and on about events that happened in the 1990’s.

Dude, give it up.
